You can search for more than just cars on Checka. If the vehicle has a registration plate or a VIN number we can find it:
...and more.
Checka report information is supplied by government agencies and other data providers such as the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), Fuelsaver, RightCar and more!
No – Checka cannot change data for you. You can get a copy of form MR16 from a Land Transport NZ agent such as a PostShop or VTNZ and send it with supporting documentation.
This happens occasionally due to handwriting illegibility on WOF forms. Send the WOF checksheet along with a covering letter to Land Transport NZ. If the checksheet is also incorrect, you will need to take your vehicle to a WOF provider who will then need to contact Land Transport to make the change. Checka cannot change this information for you.
If your Checka report says "registration has been cancelled", this is a sign that the car could have been written off but it’s not a guarantee.
Users of this information should be aware that stolen vehicle information listed here is a snapshot of data taken from the Police Vehicle of Interest Database and is updated three times per day. There can be a brief delay in stolen vehicles appearing and in recovered vehicles being cleared from the list. Some vehicles listed as stolen will have been located but the police haven't been advised. This data does not include lost or stolen registration plates.
The Motor Vehicle Register was computerised in 1986, but between 1986-88 a small number of records were deleted. Checka only checks plates and VIN's for New Zealand vehicles.
The Motor Vehicle Register (MVR) is a public register, but since 1 May 2011, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) will supply the name and address details of private individuals to authorised businesses and individuals only, not to the general public.
However, you can confirm who the current owner of a vehicle is — just enter a name or driver licence number on the check an owner page. Please note that we can’t give you the person’s or company’s details, only confirm ownership.
If you buy a Checka report and some owner details that you need are missing, we can verbally confirm the details but cannot give the information to you. Contact us with the plate or VIN number and the owner’s name and we’ll get back to you.
If you need to know the name and address of a person currently or previously registered in respect to a vehicle – and not just confirmation of that information – you can apply for those details under the Official Information Act (OIA).
This requires the NZTA to weigh up the public interest in releasing the information sought against the privacy rights of the individual concerned. Public interest usually means for the common good or general welfare of all but is not limited in any way. Each case is determined on its own merits.
Before proceeding you will need:
Apply online with the NZTA, or Download a manual application form
If a vehicle appears to be abandoned, then please advise the police of its location by contacting your local police station. If you want to provide information anonymously about this vehicle contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
